The United We Stand Theater Troupe presents its fall kids' show, "Peony's Disappearing Forest" and "Why the Wott? (Peony's return)" at Voices for Independence, 1107 Payne Avenue, Erie PA.

The play "Twelve Angry Men" has a long history. Written by Reginald Rose -- and inspired by his own experience as a juror -- it was a Studio One TV drama in 1954, a Sidney Lumet-directed film in 1957, a London production in 1964, a William Friedkin-directed TV show in 1997, and a Russian film adaptation in 2007. It came to Broadway in 2004 and is currently on national tour.
Erie's All An Act Productions secured rights to the play for its current excellent mounting of a stage adaptation of the original TV show by Sherman L. Sergel. Despite the play's long history and its presentation of racism in a '50s setting, "12 Angry Men" is no theatrical dinosaur. Audiences remain understandably receptive to its immediacy.

The shelter theme is open to broad interpretation and need not be practical: artists were encouraged to be serious, spirited or playful. A portion of profits from all work sold in the show will be donated to our own Erie area Habitat form Humanity. Year of Health Programming Begins with Examination of “Water, Health and Conflict in the Middle East”
MEADVILLE, Pa. – – Rabbi Michael Cohen, special projects coordinator with the Arava Institute in Israel, will present a free public lecture, titled “Water, Health and Conflict in the Middle East,” at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 14 in the Patricia Bush Tippie Alumni Center at Allegheny College. An informal discussion will follow the lecture.
“The Arava Institute for Environmental Studies is one of those rare phenomena in the Middle East: an organization that brings together Arabs and Jews to work together for peace and environmental protection,” said Professor of Environmental Science Eric Pallant, who as a Fulbright Scholar began working with the institute in 2001. Pallant has created and expanded a number of educational and research collaborations with the institute in the years since.

Yarina, an ensemble honored as Ambassadors for Indigenous Ecuadorian Performers by Ecuador’s Department of Culture, will appear as part of the Rhythms of Life Series at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College.
Yarina performs at noon on Tuesday, September 16, in Bruno’s Café, which is located on the second floor of the college’s Reed Union Building. The performance is free and open to the public; a full menu of lunch items is available for purchase in the café.
Yarina, or “Remembrance” in the Quichua language of the Incas, was founded in 1984 to preserve and share the beauty, courage, and sensuality of traditional Andean music and dance. Extensive travel through Europe and the Americas has resulted in Yarina adding a unique versatility of styles to its shows, incorporating jazz, blues, Latin, and Western classical masterpieces to surprise and delight audiences.
The Rhythms of Life Series is an outreach program of Penn State Behrend’s Office of Educational Equity and Diversity that seeks to inspire an appreciation of all people through vibrant presentation of the arts.

Constitution Day 2008 Celebration at Edinboro University, Tuesday, September 16.
Constitution Day 2008 will feature the nationally recognized PBS Documentary "A More Perfect Union - America Becomes a Nation." This one-hour documentary can be watched completely or in part throughout the day on the big-screen monitor located in the Frank G. Pogue Student Center lobby. It will also be shown in its entirety in Scot Cinema at 2:00 p.m.

Bill Clinton Will Make His First Appearance on the Program Sept. 22
The five co-hosts -- Barbara Walters, Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar,

who will be the only guest on the hourlong program.
Clinton's appearance is a part of the show's new "Red, White &
View" campaign, aimed at highlighting interviews and informational

Clinton Global Initiative.
The CGI, which was launched in 2005 in an effort to bring global

'Beyond the Dream' welcomes Bobby Seale
Bobby Seale, one of the most provocative black political activists of the 1960s, headlines a yearlong observance at Mercyhurst College called "Beyond the Dream," an initiative designed to examine the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on the occasion of what would have been his 80th birthday.
Seale, who co-founded the Black Panther Party in 1966 and played a leading role in the social protests of that era, will speak at Mercyhurst on Tuesday, Sept. 23, at 8:15 p.m. in the Mary D'Angelo Performing Arts Center. His talk is free and open to the public.
Seale's talk – "A Black Panther's Story – Then and Now" – launches a host of themed events, including several speakers, a film, book reading, art exhibits, a panel discussion, and concerts throughout the 2008-2009 academic year.

"Human Rights; Liberty and Justice for All?"
Marian Wright Edelman, founder and president of the Children’s Defense Fund, will present the annual Maytum Convocation Lecture at SUNY Fredonia, “Human Rights: With Liberty and Justice for All?” on Wednesday, Sept. 24. She has also been named a Williams Distinguished Visiting Professor at Fredonia.
The lecture will begin at 3:30 p.m. in King Concert Hall and Fredonia President Dennis L. Hefner will give welcoming remarks and introduce Mrs. Edelman. Her talk will be followed by a question-and-answer session moderated by Convocation Chair Linda Brigance. The University of Pittsburgh at Titusville will host an environmental film series this fall beginning in September and running through November. The theme for the series will focus on various environmental issues facing our planet. The series opens with a film examining the worldwide implications of “peak oil.” Next year, 2009, marks the sesquicentennial of the oil industry – an industry that began in Titusville 150 years ago and ushered in an age of unprecedented growth. Subsequent films will focus on global warming (crisis or scam?), the future of food production, and over population. At the conclusion of each screening, the audience is encouraged to discuss what can be done, what should be done, and the consequences of inaction.
Discussions are scheduled every other Thursday from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. in Haskell Memorial Library.

Infantry Division who get trapped near a small Tuscan village on the
Gothic Line during the Italian Campaign of World War II after one of
them risks his life to save an Italian boy.
The story is inspired by the August 1944 Sant'Anna di Stazzema massacre perpetrated by the Waffen-SS in retaliation to Italian partisan activity. There is also a reference to a sculpted head from Ponte Santa Trinita in Florence that acts as a plot device.

*Special Teacher Workshop Asbury Woods will host a workshop just for teachers based on the Leopold Education Project. The Leopold Education Project (LEP) is an innovative, interdisciplinary, critical thinking, conservation and environmental education curriculum based on the classic writings of the renowned conservationist, Aldo Leopold. The Leopold Education Project teaches about humanity's ties to the natural environment in the effort to conserve and protect the earth. Staff from DCNR, Lake Erie-Allegheny Earth Force and Asbury Woods will facilitate the workshop. Participating teachers would earn six Act 48 credits for the day, which will also include a drawing lesson on seeds, plants and objects with Lee Steadman. The teachers workshop is from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm, a pre-registration fee is required to participate; contact the Arts Council of Erie, 814-452-3427, to register.

A textile recycling day is scheduled Sept. 27 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the five Wal-Mart stores in Erie County:

1900 Keystone Drive, Summit Township;
2711 Elm St., Erie; 108 Washington Towne Blvd., Washington Township; and
5741 Buffalo Road, Harborcreek Township.
Clothes and other textile materials must be placed in clear plastic bags.
Acceptable are clean, dry clothing; sheets, towels and blankets; curtains and drapes; belts, hats and paired gloves; and socks and shoes (securely tied together).
Wet clothing, plastic and foam-backed drapes will not be accepted.
