Hello Good People:
The WNY Peace Center & SSJ Sister Karen Kimczak Center for Nonviolence are jointly hosting the 1st annual Camp Peace Prints. Its a 2 week summer camp, running July 21 - August 1, Monday - Friday, 9am - 4pm (with early drop off/ late pick up options) at the Sister Karen Center - 80 Durham Avenue.
Its an alternative summer camp. Instead of weaving baskets - they are making social change. The first week is about Freedom Movements. The second week is about Community Building & Change. Each week will include a fieldtrip to a locally significant site, incorporate the arts as forms of social justice, focus on nonviolent strategies and leadership development.
The cost is $100 a week, with sliding scale payments & scholarships available. It will be co-lead by Vicki Ross - the Peace Center's Peaceful Conflict Resolution Coordinator (a trained social worker and peace activist) and Vivian Waltz - the Director of the Sister Karen Center (who has worked extensively in both ministry & youth development).

For twelve years, the Nazis looted and destroyed art on a scale unprecedented in history. But heroic young art historians and curators from America and across Europe fought back, mounting a miraculous campaign that would rescue and return the millions of art works displaced by the war. This documentary takes an epic journey through seven countries and into a violent whirlwind of fanaticism, greed, and warfare that threatened to wipe out the artistic heritage of Europe. Narrated by Joan Allen.

Based on the true story of English journalist George Hogg, this moving film chronicles Hogg's (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) efforts in the 1930s to lead 60 orphans over the Liu Pan Shan mountains in war-ravaged China and into the safety of the Mongolian desert. Joining Hogg and the children are an American nurse (Radha Mitchell) and the fearless leader of a Chinese partisan group (Chow Yun-Fat). The journey isn't easy, but as these unlikely allies boldly forge forward through snow-covered mountains and unforgiving desert, they learn the true meaning of responsibility, courage and love.
“An engaging account of one man's journey through war and those circumstances that give meaning to the saying 'Heroes are made, not born'." - Roger Moore, Orlando Sentinel.

Erie, Pennsylvania - On Friday, August 8, 2008 at 12:00 p.m., members of the Erie Peace Initiative (EPI) will assemble at Pennsylvania State Senator Jane Earll’s Erie office and announce a “People’s Resolution” campaign:
Be it resolved, the citizens of Pennsylvania demand:
- That our Governor pursue and exhaust every avenue in his power to stop further deployment of Pennsylvania National Guard troops to Iraq.
- That our Governor pursue and exhaust every avenue in his power to bring the Pennsylvania National Guard troops currently deployed in Iraq home without delay.
The local campaign is part of a coordinated state-wide grassroots effort to keep our National Guard home. In October 2002, Congress authorized President Bush to federalize state Guard and send them to Iraq. The stipulated purpose was to defend U.S. national security against the “threat posed by Iraq.” In 2008, Iraq poses no threat to the United States; the authorization has expired; control over Pennsylvania National Guard now reverts to our governor.
